I have covered several drives here in the past and to be fair some of these are quite the kit with James Bond ringing about them and this one is no different but it has a trick up its sleeve compared to others when it comes to the tech aspect.

What does EncryptUSB do?

EncryptUSB is an automatic encryption, portable tool—an app that protects information on a USB drive. Designed to run without installation on a host computer, EncryptUSB operates from the portable drive itself, encrypting every file placed on the drive and decrypting it when moving it off the drive.

Designed with security and compliance in mind for users who transfer sensitive personal information and documents via USB drives, EncryptUSB ensures the files put on the USB drive are encrypted and password-protected.

How do I install EncryptUSB?

  1. Download the latest version. (The installer downloads the latest EncryptUSB application in the background.)
  2. Double-click EncryptUSB-Installer.exe.
  3. Select the desired portable drive [such as Install to DISKGO (E:)]
  4. Click “Install to: …”

How do I get started?

  1. Insert your USB drive.
  2. If the AutoPlay dialog appears select Open folder to view files.
  3. Double-click the EncryptUSB application.
  4. EncryptUSB application starts and displays the Create Password prompt; enter your new password twice (and a hint) and click OK.
  5. That’s all. Now every file created on the drive will be encrypted automatically. You will see a notification in the Windows notification area (system tray) once you create a file on the drive. When you open the EncryptUSB application (by clicking on the EncryptUSB icon in the notification area) you will see confirmation that your file was encrypted.

How do I properly eject the EncryptUSB drive from my computer?

Remove your external device using the same method that you normally use for your operating system, such as not ejecting the device while the computer is reading or writing to it. To ensure a safe ejection, click the icon in the Windows notification area (system tray) that reads ‘Safely remove hardware and eject media.’ Please note that the app is always running and checking for the external device. As long as there is no other interaction with the device, it is safe to remove it.

How do I know if my files are encrypted?

  1. When EncryptUSB is running, files on your drive in Windows Explorer look like regular files.
  2. When EncryptUSB is not running (because you have manually exited EncryptUSB), your files on the drive have the extension .clevx and show a lock icon.

How do I decrypt my files?

EncryptUSB automatically decrypts files every time you access files from the external drive. For example, if you double-click a Microsoft® Word document it will be decrypted and opened in Microsoft Word.

If you copy files from the EncryptUSB drive to another location such as your local hard drive or network drive, then files will be automatically decrypted.

How do I know if EncryptUSB is working properly?

You should be able to see the EncryptUSB icon in the Windows notification area (system tray).

Can multiple devices using EncryptUSB be used simultaneously?

Yes. EncryptUSB is a portable application running on the USB drive. You can have multiple drives with EncryptUSB on it running simultaneously.

How do I uninstall EncryptUSB?

The content of the drive HAS TO BE BACKED UP either on a different drive or computer BEFORE removing EncryptUSB. Simply deleting EncryptUSB.exe will result in the loss of all files on the drive forever.

What version do I have?

A ToolTip (mouse-over) on the EncryptUSB icon in the Windows notification area displays the version number.

How can I use EncryptUSB in a corporate/enterprise environment?

EncryptUSB is designed to support both private and corporate customers. For corporate deployments and storing data on corporate servers, IT Managers need to contact EncryptUSB Support and we will be happy to assist you. Many options are possible for corporate use, as both standard and custom builds are available.

Will it skip files it has already encrypted?

Except for the initial encryption, EncryptUSB encrypts only files that have changed or are new since the last encryption. It skips files that have already been encrypted.

I don’t want to encrypt every file on my drive. How can I exclude some files from the encryption process?

EncryptUSB automatically encrypts all files on your drive. You can exit from the EncryptUSB application (via the Windows notification area popup menu) to temporarily disable encryption.

Do I need to have EncryptUSB on my drive to decrypt my files?

Yes. If files are encrypted with EncryptUSB, you will need the program to decrypt them.

What is an EncryptUSB software update?

We are continuously working to improve and enhance the EncryptUSB application and make updates available at any time. The EncryptUSB application is designed to perform an automatic check for updates every time you plug in your drive, but you can also check for updates by moving the cursor over the EncryptUSB icon in the Windows notification area and clicking Check for Update in the popup menu.

Will my USB drive with EncryptUSB encrypt/decrypt files when I use it on other computers?

Yes. The application works within the external drive and will work the same when used on other computers running a Windows OS. Make sure you launch it once by double-clicking EncryptUSB.exe on your drive.

Can I use my USB drive with EncryptUSB on an Apple computer?

Only files that were copied to your USB drive after disabling EncryptUSB (unencrypted files) will be available after inserting the device into an Apple computer.

What languages are supported?

EncryptUSB is a multilingual application. It currently supports twelve languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Korean, and Japanese.
